I am a big fan of older movies/shows like; How to Marry A Millionaire (1953), The Bad Seed (1956), and the Twilight Zone series (Living Doll of 1963), just to name a few. In my opinion they all have some well accepted entertainment value. But one thing that is great about these films/shows is that they share insight on how Americans viewed money and how it was handled, obtained, and disposed of. They also serve as a great reference of how things have changed here in the United States today.
During the 1950's-1960's it was very common for households to depend on one income. During this time frame there was a strong expectancy of a husband of a household to be the cake-baker (breadwinner). Which was greatly displayed through the media of that time period.
In the funny comedy How to Marry A Millionaire there is a display of three women that live together, that all share the same hope that they will marry a man that is filthy rich. In the Bad Seed the mother walks around the house all day worried about her daughter while her husband is away working on a business trip making the money. And finally my favorite episode of all time from the Twilight Zone gives an example of a woman that clearly has to depend on her husband for financial support which is made clear in their discussion over the cost a Talky Tina Doll.
Today things are different. There is a much higher expectancy of a woman to join the workforce. In fact 40% of wives within a household are the cake-bakers (breadwinners). While in the 1960's there were only 11% of wives that were the breadwinners in their homes.
Research done by the New York Times also suggest that women are on the rise as the richer gender. Meaning that women could potentially earn more money then men. DailyWorth states that even though women are earning more money then ever before we still have trouble understanding how to build wealth. Daily Worth suggest that women are still lacking the education on how to invest and save. Building an estate is something that women seem to be somewhat clueless about.
